Painting Description
"Tea Grinder, Caddy, Tea Leaf Jar And White Camellia, 'White', From the Series Chaki Goshiki (Five Colors Of Tea Ware)" is an intricate ukiyo-e print from the Edo Period by Kubo Shunman. Born in 1757 in Edo, today's Tokyo, Shunman was a polymath who excelled in poetry, music, and art, particularly in the woodblock printing technique, ukiyo-e.
Revolved around the theme of tea ceremonies, Shunman "Chaki Goshiki" series interprets the 'five colors' as five elements of the tea ceremony. This artwork focuses on the 'white' element, which is symbolised by the white camellia, a plant commonly associated with Japan, and the implements of a tea ceremony.
The piece showcases several items fundamental to the traditional Japanese tea ceremony: a tea grinder, a tea caddy, and a tea leaf jar, center-piecing the iconic white camellia. A meticulous level of detail, characteristic of Shunman’s work, has been employed to capture these items’ textures, designs, and finishes. His unique artistic style is particularly underscored by the delicate, almost poetic depiction of the items.
This important artwork continues to be a testament to Shunman’s affinity for the elements of traditional Japanese culture and his contribution to the ukiyo-e genre’s evolution. His prints, blending elements of poetry and everyday life, are considered masterful examples of ‘surimono’ (printed thing), an artistic sub-genre where ukiyo-e meets literature and culture. And as such, Shunman’s art provides a fascinating insight into Edo period Japan, its traditions, and way of life during the 18th century.
