Painting Description
Konstantin Ivanovich Gorbatov (Russian: Константин Иванович Горбатов; 17 May 1876 - 24 May 1945) was a Russian post-impressionist painter. He was born in Stavropol the Samara province and died in Berlin. He is known for his landscape paintings, particularly those illustrating city scenes.
Gorbatov studied first in Samara, then in Riga, where he completed his gymnasium studies. He moved to Saint Petersburg and graduated from the Baron Stieglitz Central School for Technical Draftsmanship, after which he worked as a draftsman for various architectural firms.
Between 1897 and 1904, he continued his studies in the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg under Ioannis Tsiklakis. Gorbatov left the academy before graduation, after receiving a scholarship to study abroad in Italy and Germany.
He returned to St. Petersburg and participated in various exhibitions, including those of the World of Art group. In 1910, he exhibited with the Russian Artists' Union and with the New Society of Artists.
Following the October Revolution, he left Russia permanently, living in Berlin from 1922 until his death in 1945. His work from this period is primarily devoted to the old architecture of European cities, as well as landscapes and seascapes. While in Berlin, he became involved with various German-Russian organizations, including the Russian Artists' Union in Germany, and participated in their exhibitions. From the 1920s onward, he was also an active participant in exhibitions of Russian art held generally throughout Europe. Konstantin Ivanovich Gorbatov's works are exhibited in many Russian and international museums, including the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
