Painting Description
Yamauba and Kintoki is an ukiyo-e woodblock-printed painting, created by the renowned Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro. Utamaro was famous for his bijin-ga prints, essentially depictions of beautiful women. However, Yamauba Kintoki deviates from this norm to a more mythological realm, portraying the cultural figures Yamauba and her son Kintoki.
In Japanese folklore, Yamauba, the "Mountain Witch", is viewed as an uncanny figure often associated with supernatural occurrences, whereas her son, Kintoki is a hero of superhuman strength. Kintoki, also known as Kintarō, is a popular character in Japanese folk stories, and is often depicted as a child with extraordinary abilities.
In Utamaro's painting, which dates back to the late 18th-century Edo period, he presents Yamauba, depicted as a beautiful woman instead of the traditional witch-like depiction, nursing Kintoki. This representation of Yamauba reflects Utamaro's signature theme of feminine beauty. The intimacy of mother and child is captured through the artist's delicate lines and intricate patterns, the characteristic of ukiyo-e nuanced artistry.
The pictorial composition focuses on their faces and interlocking stares, reflecting a sense of quiet affection and mutual adoration. The use of shading and colour creates a dynamic contrast, thus enhancing the emotional depth in the portrait.
Utamaro's Yamauba and Kintoki, like many of his works, reflects not only his mastery in woodblock print technique but also his unique interpretation of popular Japanese folklore. Other known versions of this subject matter by Utamaro also exist highlighting the importance of this folklore in his body of work. It remains a significant piece in the appreciation and study of Japanese ukiyo-e art and Utamaro's artistic contribution.
