Painting Description
"Tiger and Dragon" (Japanese: 虎図龍図) is a pair of fusuma (sliding door) paintings by the Japanese artist Kishi Ganku (岸駒, 1749 or 1756–1839). Created in the late Edo period, these works exemplify Ganku's dynamic style and his ability to imbue traditional subjects with a sense of power and movement. The paintings depict two of the most iconic creatures in East Asian iconography: the tiger and the dragon, which are often associated with the yin and yang concept in Taoist philosophy, representing opposite but complementary forces.
Ganku, the founder of the Kishi school of painting, was known for his bold and innovative techniques that combined the realism of Maruyama Ōkyo's school with the expressive brushwork of the Chinese literati style. In "Tiger and Dragon," Ganku's expertise is evident in the vivid portrayal of the animals' muscular forms and the dynamic energy conveyed through his brushstrokes. The tiger is typically shown with a fierce expression and in a powerful stance, while the dragon is depicted amidst clouds, embodying the elemental force of nature.
These paintings are considered important cultural artifacts that reflect the aesthetic preferences and philosophical ideas of the Edo period. They also demonstrate the artist's mastery in capturing the essence of these mythical creatures, which have been subjects of fascination and reverence in Japanese art for centuries. "Tiger and Dragon" by Kishi Ganku is not only a significant work within the artist's own oeuvre but also a valuable piece within the broader context of Japanese art history.
