Painting Description
Suprematism is an art movement focused on fundamental geometric forms (particularly the square and circle) which arose in Russia in 1915, created and led by Kazimir Severinovich Malevich. It is regarded as one of the earliest and most radical developments in abstract art. The term "Suprematism" refers to an abstract art based upon "the supremacy of pure artistic feeling" rather than on visual depiction of objects. Malevich conceived it as a philosophical system espousing the purity of shape and color as a means for the artist to express clear, strong feelings and to access the "supremacy of pure feeling".
The movement gained a philosophical framework when Malevich published his manifesto, "From Cubism to Suprematism" in 1915. He followed this with a series of paintings, the most famous being "Black Square," which he presented at the Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0,10 in Petrograd. This painting, a black square on a white field, became the seminal work for the movement and is often considered one of the pivotal works of early modern art.
Suprematism was characterized by an emphasis on the basic geometric forms as the carriers of the essential feeling and energy of art. Malevich and his followers used these shapes in a variety of compositions and colors to explore visual language that didn't reference the physical world, but instead aimed to reflect the spiritual and emotional experience of the artist.
The movement had a significant influence on the development of constructivism and the abstract art movements in Europe, and it also had an impact on the design, architecture, and graphic work of the period. Despite the political turmoil of the Russian Revolution and the eventual suppression of avant-garde art by the Stalinist regime, Suprematism has continued to be influential, with its effects seen in minimalism, conceptual art, and contemporary abstract works. Malevich's work and the principles of Suprematism continue to be studied and appreciated for their groundbreaking approach and philosophical depth.
