Painting Description
"Warai Hannya" (Laughing Demon of Jealousy) is a striking woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, created as part of the series "Hyaku Monogatari" (One Hundred Ghost Tales). This series, which translates to "One Hundred Stories of Demons and Spirits," was published around 1831 during the Edo period, a time when supernatural themes were popular in ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodblock prints.
The "Warai Hannya" print depicts the visage of a Hannya, a demon that symbolizes the transformation of a woman consumed by jealousy and rage into a demonic entity. In traditional Japanese Noh theater, the Hannya mask is used to represent female characters who have become demons due to obsession or jealousy. Hokusai's interpretation in this print captures the Hannya mid-laughter, adding a chilling and ironic twist to the character's typically fearsome expression.
The chūban-sized print, which is smaller than the more common ōban size, is noted for its good impression, indicating that the print quality was high and the details were well-preserved during the printing process. However, the print has been described as slightly faded, suggesting some loss of the original vibrancy of colors over time. Despite this, the condition of the print remains good, allowing art enthusiasts and historians to appreciate Hokusai's skillful composition and use of color.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is one of the most famous artists of Japan, best known for his iconic work "The Great Wave off Kanagawa." His contributions to the ukiyo-e art form have been influential both in Japan and internationally, inspiring a range of artists from different art movements. "Warai Hannya" is a testament to Hokusai's fascination with the supernatural and his ability to evoke emotion and narrative through his mastery of the woodblock printing technique.
