Painting Description
"Kohada Koheiji" is a famous woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, who is best known for his influential series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." This particular print is part of Hokusai's lesser-known series titled "Hyaku Monogatari" (One Hundred Ghost Stories), created around 1831. The series was inspired by traditional Japanese ghost stories and folklore, which were popular during the Edo period.
The print depicts the ghost of Kohada Koheiji, a kabuki actor, who is shown haunting his wife and her lover. The story behind the artwork is rooted in a classic yurei (ghost) tale, where Koheiji is murdered by his wife and her lover, who drown him in a swamp. His vengeful spirit returns to haunt them, and Hokusai captures this eerie scene with masterful use of line and contrast, highlighting the ghost's skeletal form and chilling expression.
Hokusai's depiction not only conveys the horror and supernatural elements of traditional Japanese ghost stories but also reflects the artist's skill in portraying dynamic and dramatic subjects. "Kohada Koheiji" stands out as a compelling example of Hokusai's work in ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings that flourished during the 17th through 19th centuries, and it remains an important piece in the study of Japanese art and folklore.
