Painting Description
"The Great Wave off Kanagawa" (Japanese: 神奈川沖浪裏, Kanagawa-oki Nami Ura), also known as simply "The Great Wave," is a renowned woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833 during the Edo period as the first print in Hokusai's series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" (富嶽三十六景, Fugaku Sanjūrokkei). This series includes thirty-six prints and an additional ten, making a total of forty-six prints. "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is Hokusai's most famous work and one of the most recognizable works of Japanese art in the world.
The print depicts an enormous wave threatening boats off the coast of the prefecture of Kanagawa, with Mount Fuji rising in the background. The composition and dramatic use of contrast between the wave and the mountain have made this image iconic. It showcases Hokusai's skill in depicting motion and dynamic form, as well as his use of Prussian blue, a then-new pigment imported from Europe.
"The Great Wave off Kanagawa" has had a profound impact on both Eastern and Western art and has inspired a wide range of works across various media. Its influence can be seen in the impressionist, post-impressionist, and modernist art movements, among others. The print is a prime example of the Japanese aesthetic principle of 'ma', which emphasizes negative space, and 'yugen', which captures the profound grace and subtlety of expression.
As a cultural and artistic symbol, "The Great Wave" has been widely reproduced and has permeated popular culture, making it a staple image in discussions of Japanese art as well as a popular subject for analysis and interpretation. The print is held in numerous museum collections worldwide, and its enduring popularity continues to speak to its universal appeal and aesthetic significance.
