Painting Description
''Hokusai Manga'' (北斎漫画), also known as ''Croquis D'Hokusai'', is a collection of sketches by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎, 1760–1849). Spanning fifteen volumes, the series was published in various editions between 1814 and 1878, with the first volume appearing in the Edo period. The term "manga" in the title does not refer to the contemporary concept of manga, or Japanese comic books, but rather to a range of random drawings or sketches. It encapsulates a vast array of subjects drawn from daily life, the natural world, and the supernatural, including landscapes, flora and fauna, everyday people, and mythological creatures.
The ''Hokusai Manga'' is considered a precursor to modern manga in its broad collection of whimsical and detailed illustrations, although it was not a narrative work. The sketches were initially intended as a reference for aspiring artists, showcasing Hokusai's mastery in capturing movement and the minutiae of the human form, as well as his innovative use of perspective. Over time, the collection gained popularity for its artistic merit and its window into 19th-century Japanese culture.
Hokusai's influence on both Japanese art and the broader art world is well documented, and the ''Hokusai Manga'' plays a significant role in this legacy. The series is not only a testament to Hokusai's skill and versatility as an artist but also an invaluable resource for understanding the Edo period's society and culture. The ''Hokusai Manga'' remains a significant work for scholars and enthusiasts of Japanese art, providing insight into the historical context and aesthetic sensibilities of the time.
