Painting Description
''Fugaku Sanjūrokkei'' (富嶽三十六景), translated as "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," is a series of landscape prints by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎). Created between 1830 and 1832 during the Edo period, this series is celebrated for its artistic innovation and its profound influence on both Eastern and Western art. The prints depict Mount Fuji from various locations and in different seasons and weather conditions, showcasing Hokusai's mastery of form and his keen eye for composition and detail.
The series consists of 46 prints, with the initial 36 views supplemented by 10 additional prints due to the commercial success of the first set. Hokusai's work captures the spiritual and cultural significance of Mount Fuji, a sacred site in Japan and a symbol of national identity. The most famous print in the series, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," has become an iconic image recognized worldwide, often representing the power and beauty of nature as well as the art of woodblock printing.
Hokusai's innovative use of Prussian blue, a synthetic pigment imported from Europe, along with his dynamic use of perspective and deep spatial compositions, marked a departure from the traditional ukiyo-e style. This series not only exemplifies the peak of Hokusai's career but also had a profound impact on the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements in Europe, influencing artists such as Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.
"Fugaku Sanjūrokkei" remains one of the most famous works of Japanese art, and its prints are held in numerous museum collections around the world. The series continues to be studied and admired for its artistic excellence and its rich portrayal of the Japanese landscape, reflecting the timeless allure of Mount Fuji in the cultural imagination.
