Painting Description
"Chinese Lions" (獅子図, Shishi-zu) is a pair of six-panel folding screens (byōbu) painted by Kano Eitoku (1543–1590), a preeminent Japanese painter of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Eitoku was a member of the Kano school, the most famous and enduring school of painting in Japanese history, which served the ruling class for over 400 years from the 15th to the 19th century. The screens depict a pair of mythical Chinese lions, also known as "karajishi," which are believed to have protective qualities and are a common motif in East Asian art.
The artwork is a quintessential example of the bold and dynamic style characteristic of Eitoku, who is known for his powerful brushwork and grandiose compositions. The lions are rendered with vigorous strokes and a strong sense of movement, embodying the energy and spirit of the creatures. The use of gold leaf in the background is typical of the period and serves to highlight the majesty and supernatural presence of the lions.
"Chinese Lions" is considered an important cultural property and is often cited as a masterpiece of Eitoku's mature period. The screens are a testament to the cross-cultural exchanges between Japan and China and the adaptation of Chinese artistic themes in Japanese art. The work reflects the aesthetics and values of the warrior class during the Momoyama period, emphasizing strength, bravery, and protection.
As of the knowledge cutoff date, the screens are held in a private collection, and their display is infrequent, making public viewing opportunities rare. The artwork remains a significant example of the Kano school's impact on the development of Japanese painting and the enduring legacy of Kano Eitoku's artistic vision.
