Painting Description
"Bearded Woman" is a notable painting by the Spanish Tenebrist painter Jusepe de Ribera (also known as José de Ribera), who was active during the early Baroque period. Ribera, born on January 12, 1591, in Játiva, near Valencia, Spain, and died on September 2, 1652, in Naples, Italy, was renowned for his dramatic use of light and shadow, as well as his realistic and often stark portrayal of human subjects.
The painting "Bearded Woman" is a striking example of Ribera's interest in depicting individuals with unusual physical traits and conditions, which was a common theme in Baroque art. The work portrays Magdalena Ventura, a woman from Abruzzi, Italy, who suffered from a condition known as hirsutism, which resulted in the growth of an unusually full beard. Accompanied by her husband and child, Ventura's portrait is a study in contrasts, juxtaposing her feminine features and maternal role with her masculine facial hair, challenging contemporary notions of gender and beauty.
Created in 1631, the painting is also known by its full title, "La Mujer Barbuda (Magdalena Ventura with Her Husband and Son)," and is held in the collection of the Hospital de Tavera in Toledo, Spain. Ribera's work is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail, the empathetic representation of Ventura, and the use of chiaroscuro—a technique that employs strong contrasts between light and dark—to heighten the emotional impact of the image.
"Bearded Woman" is not only a testament to Ribera's skill as a painter but also provides insight into the societal attitudes and scientific curiosities of the 17th century regarding physical anomalies. The painting remains an important work in the study of Baroque art and continues to fascinate modern audiences with its blend of realism, empathy, and the exploration of human diversity.
