Painting Description
''Les Maîtres de l'Affiche'' (Masters of the Poster) refers to a prestigious publication and collection of posters from the Belle Époque in France. It was created and published by Jules Chéret, a French painter and lithographer who is often considered the father of the modern poster. The collection, produced from 1895 to 1900, is a significant historical document of the art of lithography and the burgeoning practice of poster art that became an essential element of Parisian culture at the end of the 19th century.
The ''Les Maîtres de l'Affiche'' series was issued as a subscription service over the course of 60 monthly installments, each containing four loose sheets. These sheets were lithographic reproductions, at a reduced scale, of the best posters by over ninety artists of the time. The collection brought together a wide range of artists, including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha, Eugène Grasset, and Théophile Steinlen, showcasing the vibrancy and diversity of the poster art form.
Chéret's initiative not only made these works accessible to a broader audience but also elevated the status of the poster from ephemeral advertising to collectible art. The ''Les Maîtres de l'Affiche'' series was highly influential, reflecting the era's artistic movements such as Art Nouveau and helping to shape the visual landscape of Paris and beyond. The collection remains a valuable resource for the study of art and advertising history and is a testament to the enduring legacy of Jules Chéret and his contemporaries in the field of graphic design.
