Painting Description
"Belshazzar's Feast" is a notable painting by the Spanish Baroque artist Juan Carreño de Miranda, created approximately between 1650 and 1670. This work depicts the biblical story of the same name from the Book of Daniel, where the Babylonian king Belshazzar holds a lavish feast using sacred vessels looted from the Temple in Jerusalem, only to witness a divine hand writing mysterious words on the palace wall, foretelling his doom.
Carreño de Miranda, born in Avilés in 1614 and died in Madrid in 1685, was a court painter to King Charles II of Spain and is considered one of the most important Spanish painters of his time. His style is characterized by its elegance, color, and psychological insight, which he brought to bear in his religious and mythological works, as well as his portraits of the Spanish aristocracy.
"Belshazzar's Feast" is a prime example of Carreño de Miranda's mastery in handling complex narrative scenes and his ability to infuse them with dramatic intensity. The painting is remarkable for its vivid depiction of the opulence and decadence of Belshazzar's court, contrasted with the ominous supernatural event that interrupts the revelry. The artist's use of light and shadow, as well as his attention to detail in the sumptuous costumes and architectural elements, contribute to the overall impact of the scene.
The painting is a significant work within Carreño de Miranda's oeuvre and offers insight into the religious and cultural themes of 17th-century Spain. It reflects the Baroque interest in dramatic storytelling and the use of visual art to convey moral and spiritual lessons. "Belshazzar's Feast" by Juan Carreño de Miranda remains an important piece for scholars studying Spanish Baroque art and the historical context in which it was produced.
