Painting Description
"An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump" is a 1768 oil-on-canvas painting by the English artist Joseph Wright of Derby, one of a number of candlelit scenes that Wright painted during the 1760s. The painting departed from the conventions of the time by depicting a scientific subject in the reverential manner formerly reserved for scenes of historical or religious significance. Wright was intimately involved in the scientific circle of the Enlightenment and was a member of the Lunar Society, a group of prominent figures in the Midlands of England, including scientists and industrialists who were at the forefront of the Age of Enlightenment.
The work portrays a natural philosopher, a precursor to the modern scientist, recreating one of Robert Boyle's air pump experiments, where a bird is deprived of air, before a varied group of onlookers. The painting illustrates the struggle between life and death, and the issue of whether or not the bird will live is left ambiguous to the viewer. Wright's use of chiaroscuro effect emphasizes the contrast of light and dark, highlighting the faces of the spectators and the drama of the event.
The painting is notable for its blend of both the sublime and the Enlightenment. By combining the intense emotions of the sublime with the reasoned observational skills promoted during the Enlightenment, Wright's painting encourages the viewer to consider the role of science and the moral questions raised by scientific advances. It is a key work in the development of Wright's oeuvre and a classic example of Enlightenment-era art. "An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump" is held in the collection of the National Gallery in London and remains an important work for its historical context, its dramatic aesthetic, and its impact on the portrayal of scientific subjects in art.
