Painting Description
"Belisarius Receiving Alms" is an oil painting created by the noted artist, Josef Wright of Derby in 1775. It is notable for its depiction of the legendaryantine general, Belisarius, who served under the Emperor Justinian I. The painting draws upon a widely-circulated legend that Belisarius, after falling out of favor, was reduced to a blind beggar.
In the painting, Belisarius is shown as an indigent, being given aid from a passer-by. This poignant moment typifies Wright's sentimentality and his ability to create intense, yet sublime lighting effects to heighten emotion. It exhibits the profound influence of the “Grand Style” of painting, which was championed by Joshua Reynolds, and reflects the overall Neoclassical style of the period with a historical subject matter, dramatic presentation and an emphasis on moral lesson.
Measuring approximately 127.0 cm × 101.6 cm (50.0 in × 40.0 in), the painting is currently held by the Derby Museum and Art Gallery, which houses several of Wright’s significant works. "Belisarius Receiving Alms" not only communicates a moving story, but it also provides a notable example of Wright's mastery of light and shadow, a characteristic feature of his work.
Josef Wright of Derby, born in 1734, was an English landscape and portrait painter. Known as the "Painter of Light" for his notable use of chiaroscuro effect in his paintings, Wright produced a wide range of works throughout his career, including portrayals of industrial subjects, landscapes, and scenes from literature or mythology. With "Belisarius Receiving Alms," Wright continues to explore these themes, utilizing this historical tale to exhibit the fleeting nature of fame and the enduring dignity of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
