Painting Description
"Amazonok" or "Amazons" is a notable painting by the Hungarian artist, Károly Kernstok. Completed in 1909, the painting is often hailed as a pioneering piece in the modernist Hungarian art movement. The artwork demonstrates Kernstok's unique artistic style that deviated from his typical academic training and leaned towards avant-garde expression. The subject matter of "Amazons is intriguing, depicting a scene influenced by the ancient Greek myth of Amazonian women warriors.
Kernstok's use of bold colours, such as the vivid red of the warriors' hair, along with the high contrast against the background's deep greens and blues, represent the artist's exploration of Fauvism. The painting is furthermore significant, as it marked a departure from the largely realist and naturalist tendencies of Hungarian painting at that time, propelling the local art scene onto the modernist stage. Unusual in the canon of Kernstok's work, "Amazons" still retains a sense of his characteristic revelry in femininity and power.
At its unveiling at the "Nyolcak" (The Eight) exhibition in Budapest in 1911, "Amazons" commanded attention and drew both admiration and controversy. Critics praised Kernstok's audacious visual language and provocative subject matter, recognising it as a signal of a new direction in Hungarian art. Today, "Amazons" continues to hold a prominent place in the history of 20th-century Hungarian painting. The painting is currently housed in the Hungarian National Gallery, perpetuating its legacy and influence in Hungarian cultural history.
