Painting Description
The "Map of Szolnok" is a notable historical illustration from the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," which is considered one of the most important works in the history of urban cartography. The "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," or "Cities of the World," was edited and partly engraved by the Flemish artist and cartographer Georg Braun and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg. It was published in Cologne between 1572 and 1617. This ambitious project was the first systematic collection of urban maps, including over 500 plans, bird's-eye views, and maps of cities from around the world.
Joris Hoefnagel, a Flemish artist, played a significant role in the latter stages of the Civitates' production, contributing numerous engravings to the work. The "Map of Szolnok" is one of his contributions, depicting the Hungarian city of Szolnok in the 16th century. Hoefnagel's work is characterized by its meticulous detail and artistic finesse, which not only provided a cartographic representation of the city but also a vivid portrayal of the Renaissance urban landscape.
The map itself is a valuable historical document, offering insights into the urban structure, architecture, and fortifications of Szolnok during a time when the city was an important military and trading site. It reflects the city's strategic importance on the banks of the Tisza River and its role in the defense against Ottoman incursions during the period. The "Map of Szolnok" is not only significant for its aesthetic and cartographic value but also for its contribution to the understanding of urban development in Central Europe during the late Renaissance.
As a part of the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," the "Map of Szolnok" is held in high esteem among historians, geographers, and art historians for its accuracy and beauty. It remains an important resource for those studying the history and growth of European cities, as well as the history of cartography and Renaissance art. The map is preserved in various historical archives and libraries around the world and is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Braun, Hogenberg, Hoefnagel, and other artists and cartographers who contributed to the Civitates.
