Painting Description
The "Map of Flissinga" is a notable cartographic work from the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," which is often considered the first modern atlas of cities. The "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," or "Cities of the World," was edited and partly created by Georg Braun and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg. However, the "Map of Flissinga" is attributed to Joris Hoefnagel, an artist and engraver of Flemish origin, who contributed to the latter volumes of the Civitates.
Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1600) was a well-traveled artist whose works included illuminations, miniatures, and engravings. His contributions to the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" are particularly valued for their artistic merit and the detailed urban landscapes they depict. The "Map of Flissinga" represents the city of Vlissingen (Flushing) in the Netherlands, a strategic port city known for its role in maritime trade and military history.
Published in the late 16th century, the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" spanned six volumes and contained over 500 maps and views of cities from around the world. The "Map of Flissinga" is a fine example of the detailed cityscapes that made the atlas a valuable resource for understanding urban life in the early modern period. It provides not only a bird's-eye view of the city's layout, streets, and buildings but also offers insight into the daily activities of its inhabitants and the city's defenses, reflecting the military significance of Vlissingen during a time of frequent conflicts in Europe.
The "Map of Flissinga" is significant both as a historical document and as a work of art. It exemplifies the blend of accuracy and aesthetics that characterized the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," making it an important reference for historians, cartographers, and art historians alike. The map is preserved in various collections and libraries around the world and remains a subject of study for its depiction of Renaissance urbanism and cartographic innovation.
