Painting Description
"The Declaration of Independence" is a famous oil-on-canvas painting by American artist John Trumbull, completed in 1818. It hangs in the rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., as part of the Capitol's collection of historical American art. The painting depicts the moment on June 28, 1776, when the five-member Drafting Committee of the Second Continental Congress presented their draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Congress. The committee consisted of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston.
Trumbull's painting is notable not only for its historical significance but also for its artistic merit. It measures 12 by 18 feet and is one of four large paintings by Trumbull in the Capitol rotunda that depict pivotal moments in the American Revolutionary War. The scene in the painting is an idealized representation, aiming to capture the essence and gravity of the occasion rather than the specifics of the event's chronology or setting. Trumbull included portraits of 42 of the 56 signers and five other patriots, making it a valuable historical record as well as a work of art. The painting has been widely reproduced and remains an iconic symbol of American freedom and independence.
