Painting Description
"Qua-ta-wa-pea, A Shawanoe Chief; Payta-kootha, A Shawanoe Warrior; And Tens-kwau-ta-waw, The Prophet, From Mckenney And Hall's" is a series of lithographs created by John T. Bowen, an American lithographer active in the 19th century. These lithographs are part of a larger collection of portraits that were included in Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall's seminal work, "History of the Indian Tribes of North America." The collection, which was published in three volumes from 1836 to 1844, contains biographies and portraits of Native American leaders and significant figures from various tribes.
The lithographs of Qua-ta-wa-pea, Payta-kootha, and Tens-kwau-ta-waw are notable for their historical and cultural significance. Qua-ta-wa-pea, also known as Colonel Lewis, was a Shawnee chief known for his diplomatic efforts. Payta-kootha, or Captain Reed, was recognized as a brave Shawnee warrior. Tens-kwau-ta-waw, better known as Tenskwatawa, was a religious leader and prophet, and the brother of the famous Shawnee leader Tecumseh.
Bowen's lithographs are based on original oil paintings by various artists, including Charles Bird King, who was commissioned by McKenney to paint portraits of visiting Native American delegates in Washington, D.C. The lithographs were an important means of preserving the images of these leaders, as the original oil paintings were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian Institution in 1865.
The "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" is considered a landmark in American historical literature and art, providing a valuable record of Native American leaders during a time of significant change and conflict. Bowen's lithographs, including those of Qua-ta-wa-pea, Payta-kootha, and Tens-kwau-ta-waw, are appreciated for their artistic quality and as a visual documentation of individuals who played critical roles in the history of their people and in the broader narrative of the United States.
