Painting Description
''Boy with a Squirrel'' (also known as ''Henry Pelham'') is a 1765 oil-on-canvas painting by American artist John Singleton Copley, one of the preeminent portraitists of colonial New England. The work is a half-length portrait of Copley's half-brother, Henry Pelham, depicted at about the age of ten. The painting is notable for its exquisite detail and the lifelike representation of the young boy and his pet squirrel, which is tethered to a gold chain. The inclusion of a water glass, in which the squirrel's chain and the window's reflection are visible, showcases Copley's skill in rendering textures and reflective surfaces, and is often cited as an example of his mastery of naturalistic detail.
Measuring approximately 77.5 cm by 63.5 cm (30.5 in by 25 in), the painting is a significant work in Copley's oeuvre, representing a shift in American portraiture from the more rigid and formal styles of the past to a more personal and intimate approach. "Boy with a Squirrel" is also recognized for its historical importance as the painting that Copley sent to London for exhibition at the Society of Artists in 1766. The positive reception of this work in England helped establish Copley's reputation abroad and encouraged his eventual move to London in 1774, where he would go on to achieve greater fame and success as a portraitist.
The painting is held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and remains an iconic example of early American art, reflecting the sophistication and potential of the New World's cultural achievements during the colonial period. "Boy with a Squirrel" is often studied for its artistic merits and as a reflection of the social and cultural milieu of the time, offering insight into the colonial American identity and the burgeoning artistic tradition that would continue to evolve into the early years of the United States.
