Painting Description
"Gassed" is a monumental oil painting by the American artist John Singer Sargent, completed in March 1919. The painting, which measures approximately 7.5 feet by 20 feet (231.1 cm × 611.1 cm), is housed in the Imperial War Museum in London and stands as one of Sargent's most significant works. It was commissioned by the British War Memorials Committee as part of a series intended to document the First World War and to contribute to a planned Hall of Remembrance that was never built.
The painting depicts a scene from the aftermath of a mustard gas attack during the First World War, with a line of British soldiers blinded by the gas being led to a dressing station. The soldiers are seen in a near single file, each with his hand on the shoulder of the man in front, their eyes bandaged, navigating through a landscape scarred by the ravages of war. In the background, other soldiers can be seen engaged in a football match, seemingly oblivious to the suffering of their comrades, which adds a poignant and ironic note to the scene.
Sargent was inspired to create "Gassed" after witnessing a similar scene in real life at a dressing station at Le Bac-du-Sud, near Arras in France. The work is renowned for its powerful evocation of the horrors of chemical warfare and the human cost of the conflict. It combines Sargent's skill as a portraitist with his ability to capture the grandeur and tragedy of historical scenes, resulting in a work that is both intimate in its portrayal of individual suffering and epic in its narrative scope.
The painting has been praised for its masterful composition and use of light, with the setting sun casting a golden glow that contrasts with the grim reality of the soldiers' injuries. "Gassed" has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation, and it remains a poignant reminder of the brutal consequences of war, as well as a significant achievement in the oeuvre of John Singer Sargent.
