Painting Description
"Temple of Flora: The Blue Egyptian Water Lily" is a botanical illustration by John Robert Thornton, a part of his larger work, "The Temple of Flora," which is considered one of the most sumptuous and magnificent botanical publications. Published between 1799 and 1807, "The Temple of Flora" is the third and final part of Thornton's larger project, "A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnaeus," which aimed to celebrate the Linnaean system of classification.
The illustration of the Blue Egyptian Water Lily is notable for its artistic quality and the romantic style that characterizes the "Temple of Flora." Thornton commissioned some of the most talented artists of his time, including Philip Reinagle, Peter Henderson, and Abraham Pether, to create the illustrations, which were then engraved by Thomas Medland, among others. The Blue Egyptian Water Lily plate stands out for its vivid colors and the dramatic landscape backdrop, which was a departure from the more traditional, clinical botanical illustrations of the time.
Thornton's ambitious project was not a commercial success, leading to financial ruin, but it left a lasting legacy in the field of botanical illustration. The "Temple of Flora" has been celebrated for its contribution to the arts, particularly for its blend of scientific detail and aesthetic appeal. The Blue Egyptian Water Lily, like the other illustrations in the collection, is highly prized by collectors and considered a masterpiece of botanical art.
