Painting Description
Sir Orlando Bridgeman, 1st Baronet (1608-1674), was a prominent English lawyer and politician during the tumultuous period of the English Civil War and the Restoration. Born into a distinguished family, Bridgeman was the son of John Bridgeman, Bishop of Chester. He pursued his education at Queen's College, Oxford, and subsequently trained in law at the Inner Temple, one of the four Inns of Court in London. Bridgeman's legal acumen and dedication to the Royalist cause during the Civil War earned him significant recognition and favor.
Throughout his career, Bridgeman held several key legal and political positions. He was appointed as the Recorder of Chester in 1638 and later became the Chief Justice of the Great Sessions for North Wales. His loyalty to the monarchy was unwavering, and he served as a legal advisor to King Charles I during the Civil War. Following the execution of Charles I and the establishment of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell, Bridgeman's career faced a temporary setback. However, with the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, his fortunes revived.
King Charles II appointed Bridgeman as the Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer in 1660, and he was subsequently promoted to Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in 1668. His legal expertise and steadfast support for the Crown culminated in his appointment as Lord Keeper of the Great Seal in 1667, a position he held until his resignation in 1672. Bridgeman was created a baronet in 1660, further solidifying his status and contributions to the legal and political landscape of England.
Sir Orlando Bridgeman's legacy is marked by his significant contributions to the legal profession and his unwavering loyalty to the monarchy during one of England's most turbulent eras. His life and career reflect the complexities and challenges faced by legal professionals and politicians in a time of civil strife and restoration.
