Painting Description
"Portrait of Samuel Pepys" is an oil painting by the English artist John Riley, created in 1689. Samuel Pepys (1633–1703) was a naval administrator and Member of Parliament, who is now most famous for the diary he kept for a decade while still a relatively young man. John Riley (1646–1691) was an English portrait painter who became the chief artist to King James II after the death of Sir Peter Lely.
The portrait depicts Pepys at the age of 56, a year after he had ceased writing his famous diary. It is one of the most well-known images of Pepys and has been widely reproduced due to its detailed representation of one of the most significant figures in 17th-century England. The painting is characterized by its realistic portrayal and the somber, reflective mood it conveys. Pepys is shown in half-length, wearing a wig and the robes of the Master of the Trinity House, a position he held from 1685 to 1686, which oversaw the safety and regulation of British shipping.
Riley's work captures the intellectual and administrative prowess of Pepys, who played a significant role in the modernization of the Royal Navy. The portrait is noted for its fine craftsmanship and the way it communicates the sitter's personality and status. The artist's use of light and shadow, as well as the attention to the textures of fabric and the sitter's skin, are particularly admired.
The "Portrait of Samuel Pepys" by John Riley is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. It remains an important work for both its artistic merit and its historical significance, offering insight into the life of one of the most documented figures of Restoration England.
