Painting Description
"From Paradise Lost" is a series of mezzotint illustrations created by the English Romantic painter and engraver John Martin (1789–1854), inspired by John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost" (1667). Martin's work, known for its dramatic and sublime portrayal of vast and apocalyptic landscapes, found a powerful subject in Milton's depiction of the biblical story of the Fall of Man, the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan, and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
The series, produced between 1825 and 1827, consists of 24 plates and is considered one of Martin's most significant contributions to the Romantic movement in art. His illustrations for "Paradise Lost" are characterized by their grand scale, meticulous detail, and the use of light and shadow to evoke an emotional response. Martin's work captures the grandeur and terror of Milton's narrative, emphasizing the vastness of the cosmos and the moral drama of the poem.
John Martin's "From Paradise Lost" not only reflects the artist's fascination with the sublime but also illustrates the 19th-century interest in the intersection of art and literature. The illustrations were widely acclaimed and contributed to the revival of interest in Milton's work during the Victorian era. Martin's engravings were also influential in shaping the visual imagination of the poem for generations, affecting how readers envisioned the scenes depicted in Milton's epic.
The series was well-received in Martin's time and remains an important example of Romantic-era book illustration. Today, the plates are held in various collections and continue to be studied for their artistic merit and their role in the interpretation of one of the English language's most significant literary works.
