Painting Description
"The Birds of America" is a seminal work by naturalist and painter John James Audubon, first published as a series in sections between 1827 and 1838, in Edinburgh and London. The work consists of a collection of 435 life-sized watercolors of North American birds, all reproduced from hand-engraved plates, and is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon's major work represents not only a technical and artistic achievement but also a comprehensive ornithological record that details a wide array of bird species, some of which have become extinct since its publication.
Audubon developed a unique method of binding dead birds in natural positions and drawing them on a grid of natural size, which distinguished his work from other bird illustrations predominantly composed of stiff poses. The detail and quality of his paintings, which combine vibrant artistic interpretation with scientifically accurate representations, helped set a new standard in ornithological illustration.
Each image in "The Birds of America" was printed on sheets measuring about 39 by 26 inches, known as double elephant folio. Due to the large size and the cost of producing the book, only 120 complete copies are known to exist, and they are among the most valuable print books ever sold. The work's impact extends beyond ornithology to influence various aspects of art and science, including the conservation movement in the United States.
