Painting Description
John James Audubon, a renowned American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, is best known for his expansive studies and illustrations of North American birds. One of his significant contributions to the field of ornithology and art is the series "The Birds of America," which has been celebrated for its detailed and lifelike representations of bird species. Among the various editions and reproductions of Audubon's work, the edition known as "By Julius Bien" holds a unique place in the history of ornithological illustration.
The "By Julius Bien" edition refers to a chromolithographic reproduction of Audubon's original "The Birds of America" plates. This edition was produced by Julius Bien, a prominent lithographer of the 19th century, who was commissioned by Audubon's son, John Woodhouse Audubon, in the mid-1850s. The aim was to create a more affordable and accessible version of the original work, which had been published between 1827 and 1838 in a series of hand-colored engravings.
Julius Bien utilized the then-modern technique of chromolithography, which allowed for the mass production of colored prints. This method was less labor-intensive and more cost-effective than the hand-coloring process used in the original edition. The "By Julius Bien" edition was intended to be published in 44 parts, each containing 10 plates, but due to various challenges, including the outbreak of the Civil War, the project was never completed. Only 15 parts, comprising 150 plates, were ultimately produced and distributed.
Despite its incomplete status, the "By Julius Bien" edition remains a significant artifact in the history of natural history illustration. It represents an important attempt to democratize access to Audubon's work and to advance the techniques of color printing. Collectors and historians value the edition for its historical context and the quality of Bien's lithographic work, which, while different from the original hand-colored engravings, still captures the essence and beauty of Audubon's vision.
