Painting Description
"American Avocet, Red-breasted Snipe, And Golden-eye Duck (plate CCCXVIII, CCCXXXV and CCCIII)" is a collection of ornithological illustrations by the renowned American naturalist and painter John James Audubon. These plates are part of Audubon's monumental work, "The Birds of America," which was published as a series in sections between 1827 and 1838. The work consists of hand-colored, life-size prints made from engraved plates and is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed.
Plate CCCXVIII features the American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana), a wading bird known for its distinctive upward-curved bill and striking black and white plumage. The Red-breasted Snipe, now commonly known as the Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata), is depicted in plate CCCXXXV. This bird is characterized by its long, straight bill and cryptic brown, black, and white patterning, which serves as camouflage in its marshy habitats. Plate CCCIII presents the Golden-eye Duck, referred to in modern times as the Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), a medium-sized sea duck noted for its bright yellow eyes and contrasting white and black plumage.
Audubon's work is celebrated for its artistic beauty and scientific accuracy. He employed a technique of portraying birds in their natural habitats and in lifelike poses, often engaging in typical behaviors. "The Birds of America" was a groundbreaking project for its time, contributing significantly to ornithological knowledge and the study of American birds. The original double elephant folio edition of "The Birds of America" is one of the most sought-after and valuable books in the world, with only 120 complete copies known to exist as of 2021.
The illustrations of the American Avocet, Red-breasted Snipe, and Golden-eye Duck are exemplary of Audubon's skill and dedication to depicting birds in a manner that was both aesthetically pleasing and scientifically informative. These plates, like the others in the collection, have had a lasting impact on the fields of art and ornithology, and continue to be admired for their detail and beauty.
