Painting Description
"Urochroa bougueri" is a lithograph by the English ornithologist and bird artist John Gould. It is part of his larger work, "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds," which was published in parts between 1849 and 1861. This particular lithograph depicts the Rufous-gaped Hillstar, a species of hummingbird found in the Andean region of South America, which is known for its distinctive rufous-colored gape and iridescent plumage.
John Gould (1804–1881) was renowned for his detailed and vibrant illustrations of birds, and his contributions to ornithology were significant, particularly in the Victorian era. His works were not only scientifically valuable but also highly regarded for their artistic merit. "Urochroa bougueri" is an example of Gould's meticulous approach to illustrating birds, capturing both the scientific detail and the aesthetic beauty of the subject.
The lithograph would have been created using a process that involved drawing the image on a flat stone or metal plate with a greasy substance, then treating the surface with a chemical solution that ensured the ink would adhere only to the drawn areas. The resulting prints were then often hand-colored by Gould's team of artists, which included his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and later, after her death, artists such as William Matthew Hart.
As a piece within "A Monograph of the Trochilidae," "Urochroa bougueri" contributed to the comprehensive documentation of hummingbird species, which was a significant undertaking at the time. Gould's monograph remains a classic work in ornithological literature and is still appreciated by bird enthusiasts and art collectors alike for its historical value and artistic excellence.
The lithograph, like many of Gould's works, would have been aimed at a Victorian audience with an interest in natural history and the means to purchase such luxury items. Today, original prints of "Urochroa bougueri" and other illustrations from Gould's monograph are sought after by collectors and can be found in museums, libraries, and private collections around the world.
