Painting Description
Elizabeth Corbet Yeats, often referred to as Lolly, was an influential figure in the Irish arts and crafts movement and a notable member of the Yeats family, which included her famous siblings, poet W.B. Yeats and painter Jack B. Yeats. Born on March 11, 1868, in London, she was the daughter of John Butler Yeats, a renowned portrait artist, and Susan Mary Pollexfen. Elizabeth's early life was marked by frequent relocations due to her father's artistic career, which exposed her to various cultural and artistic influences.
Elizabeth's formal education included time at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and the Royal Dublin Society, where she honed her skills in art and design. Her artistic journey took a significant turn when she became involved with the Arts and Crafts Movement, which emphasized traditional craftsmanship and the decorative arts. In 1902, she co-founded the Dun Emer Guild with Evelyn Gleeson and her sister, Lily Yeats. The guild aimed to revive traditional Irish crafts and provide employment for women. Elizabeth managed the printing press, producing beautifully crafted books that became highly regarded for their quality and artistic merit.
In 1908, Elizabeth and Lily left Dun Emer to establish their own enterprise, Cuala Press, which became one of the most important private presses of the 20th century. Under Elizabeth's management, Cuala Press published works by prominent Irish writers, including her brother W.B. Yeats, as well as other literary figures such as J.M. Synge and Ezra Pound. The press was known for its meticulous craftsmanship, limited editions, and distinctive aesthetic, which combined traditional Irish motifs with contemporary design.
Elizabeth Corbet Yeats's contributions to the arts extended beyond her work with Cuala Press. She was also an accomplished watercolorist and an advocate for women's rights, actively participating in the suffrage movement. Her legacy is preserved in the enduring quality of the books she produced and her role in promoting Irish culture and craftsmanship. Elizabeth Corbet Yeats passed away on January 16, 1940, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of art and literature.
