Painting Description
Regensburg: 1735-45 by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann is a seminal work in the field of botanical illustration and horticultural literature. Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741) was a renowned apothecary and botanist based in Regensburg, Germany. His magnum opus, often referred to by its full title "Phytanthoza Iconographia," was published in several volumes between 1735 and 1745. This extensive work is celebrated for its detailed and vibrant illustrations of plants, flowers, and fruits, which were groundbreaking at the time for their accuracy and artistic quality.
The "Phytanthoza Iconographia" is notable for its use of mezzotint, a printmaking process that allowed for the creation of rich, detailed images with subtle gradations of tone. This technique was relatively new in the early 18th century, and Weinmann's work is one of the earliest and most significant examples of its application to botanical illustration. The illustrations were created by a team of artists and engravers, including Georg Dionysius Ehret, one of the most prominent botanical artists of the period, and Bartholomäus Seuter.
Weinmann's work is not only an artistic achievement but also a scientific one. It includes over a thousand plates depicting more than 4,000 plant species, many of which were described and illustrated for the first time. The detailed illustrations were accompanied by descriptions in Latin and German, making the work accessible to a wide audience of scholars, horticulturists, and apothecaries.
The "Phytanthoza Iconographia" had a significant impact on the field of botany and the study of plant species. It served as a valuable reference for botanists and horticulturists and contributed to the advancement of botanical science in the 18th century. Today, Weinmann's work is highly regarded for its historical importance and its contribution to the art of botanical illustration. Original copies of the volumes are considered rare and valuable, often held in the collections of major libraries and museums around the world.
