Painting Description
The Statue of Olympian Zeus by Phidias by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach is an engraving that depicts the renowned ancient Greek sculptor Phidias presenting his masterpiece, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, to onlookers. This work of art is a creative interpretation by the Austrian architect, sculptor, and historian Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656–1723), who is best known for his significant contributions to baroque architecture. The engraving is part of Fischer von Erlach's collection of illustrations found in his influential book "Entwurf einer historischen Architektur" (A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture), first published in 1721.
In this engraving, Fischer von Erlach imagines the grandeur of the ancient wonder, the Statue of Zeus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The original statue, created by the Greek sculptor Phidias circa 435 BC, was a monumental chryselephantine sculpture of the god Zeus, seated on an ornate throne within the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, Greece. Although the actual statue has been lost to history, it was said to have stood at approximately 12 meters (39 feet) tall, made of ivory plates and gold panels over a wooden framework.
Fischer von Erlach's work serves not only as an artistic homage to the lost masterpiece but also as a historical reconstruction, blending his imagination with the descriptions of ancient writers such as Pausanias and Strabo. The engraving showcases the grandiosity and artistic achievements of classical antiquity, reflecting the 18th-century European fascination with ancient Greek and Roman culture. It also exemplifies the baroque era's interest in dramatic effect and elaborate detail, as Fischer von Erlach's representation is filled with rich ornamentation and a sense of movement, bringing the scene to life for the viewer.
The Statue of Olympian Zeus by Phidias by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach is an important work in the history of art and architecture, as it not only represents the 18th-century European engagement with classical antiquity but also contributes to the visual documentation and interpretation of one of the lost wonders of the ancient world.
