Painting Description
The Lighthouse at Alexandria, also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and a testament to the engineering prowess of the Hellenistic period. Commissioned by Ptolemy I Soter, the founder of the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt, and completed during the reign of his son Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the lighthouse was constructed on the small island of Pharos, off the coast of Alexandria. It served as both a landmark and a beacon for sailors navigating the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, an Austrian architect, sculptor, and architectural historian of the Baroque period, depicted the Lighthouse at Alexandria in his work "Entwurf einer historischen Architektur" (A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture), first published in 1721. This influential book was one of the first and most important comparative studies of world architecture, including illustrations and descriptions of buildings from different cultures and time periods. Fischer von Erlach's representation of the Lighthouse at Alexandria is a significant historical reconstruction, although it is more a product of the Baroque imagination than an accurate archaeological depiction.
In his illustration, Fischer von Erlach presents the lighthouse as a tiered structure with a broad rectangular base, a middle octagonal section, and a circular top, capped with a statue. This interpretation, while not entirely consistent with archaeological evidence, reflects the grandeur and scale that the actual lighthouse would have had in its time. The Lighthouse at Alexandria, as visualized by Fischer von Erlach, has since become an iconic symbol of ancient architectural achievements, despite the fact that the actual structure no longer exists, having been destroyed by a series of earthquakes between the 12th and 14th centuries.
Fischer von Erlach's work, including his depiction of the Lighthouse at Alexandria, played a crucial role in the dissemination of architectural knowledge and the Neoclassical revival of the 18th century. His imaginative reconstructions continue to inspire and influence the fields of architecture and historical studies, even as modern scholarship seeks to refine our understanding of ancient structures based on archaeological findings.
