Painting Description
"Gyptis and Protis" is an 1874 oil painting on canvas by French artist Joanny Rave. The painting narrates a significant historical event tied to the origin of Marseille, the oldest city in France. According to the ancient Greek legend, Protis, a Greek sailor from Phocaea, was offered the hand in marriage of Gyptis, the daughter of a local Ligurian chieftain, who chose him purposely during a ritual ceremony. Their union ultimately led to the establishment of Massalia present-day Marseille, around 600 BCE. The remarkable event is depicted in Rave's artwork where Gyptis is seen offering the ceremonial cup to Protis as a sign of her choice, surrounded by various attendees witnessing the symbolic moment.
Rave's interpretation is made distinct by the use of lush colors and intricate details that are characteristic of his style, while the theme reflects the 19th-century interest in the Ancient world and mythical narratives. "Gyptis and Protis," though not as widely acknowledged as other historical paintings of the time, remains a significant representation of the legendary foundation of Marseille, reflecting the intimate entanglement of personal choice and defining historical events.
The artwork is part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille, making it accessible for both local and international audiences keen on exploring the city's ancient roots articulated via the artistic vision of Joanny Rave.
