Painting Description
"Madame Henriette de France as Flora" (1727–1752) is an oil on canvas painting by the French artist Jean-Marc Nattier, completed in 1742. The painting is part of a series of allegorical portraits commissioned by Louis XV of France, depicting his daughters in the guise of classical goddesses or personifications. In this artwork, Nattier portrays Madame Henriette, one of the twin daughters of Louis XV and Marie Leszczyńska, as Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring.
The painting measures 80 x 64.5 cm and is currently housed in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France. It is a prime example of Nattier's skill in combining portraiture with mythological themes, a popular trend in the Rococo period. The artist's mastery in rendering textures and his delicate use of color are evident in the depiction of Madame Henriette's sumptuous attire and the floral elements that surround her, which enhance the painting's elegance and its subject's youthful beauty.
Nattier's work was highly sought after by the French aristocracy during his lifetime, and his portraits of the royal family were particularly celebrated for their grace and refinement. "Madame Henriette de France as Flora" is not only a testament to Nattier's artistic prowess but also serves as a historical document of the French court's taste and the iconography associated with royal portraiture in the 18th century.
