Painting Description
"Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry: Octobre (October)" is one of the most celebrated illuminated manuscript pages from the "Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry," a book of hours commissioned by John, Duke of Berry, around the turn of the 15th century. The manuscript is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the International Gothic style and was primarily created by the Limbourg brothers—Paul, Jean, and Herman—from 1412 to 1416. The month of October is depicted in a full-page miniature that illustrates the agricultural activities associated with autumn, set against the backdrop of a château, which is often identified as the Louvre in Paris.
The October page is renowned for its detailed representation of the seasonal landscape and the lifelike portrayal of peasants at work. It shows laborers sowing the fields, with one of them scattering seeds while another drives a plow drawn by a pair of horses. The attention to detail extends to the depiction of the château, the surrounding environment, and the clothing of the figures, providing valuable insight into the fashion and architecture of the period.
The artistic contribution of the Limbourg brothers to the "Les Très Riches Heures" is significant, as they brought innovative use of color and intricate detail to their miniatures, which were painted with rich pigments and gold leaf. Their work on the manuscript ceased abruptly in 1416 due to their untimely deaths, possibly from the plague, leaving the manuscript unfinished. It was later completed by other artists in the 15th century, including Jean Colombe.
"Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry: Octobre" is not only a work of religious devotion but also a cultural artifact that reflects the societal norms and daily life of the medieval period. It is housed in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France, and remains one of the most studied and admired works from the Middle Ages, offering a window into the world of medieval art, devotion, and the courtly life of the European nobility.
