Painting Description
"Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" is an illuminated manuscript commissioned by John, Duke of Berry, and created by the Limbourg brothers—Paul, Herman, and Jean—between 1412 and 1416. This manuscript is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of late medieval French Gothic manuscript illumination. Among its most celebrated folios is the illustration for the month of February, known as "Février."
The "Février" page is notable for its detailed depiction of winter life in the early 15th century. The scene is set in a rural landscape blanketed with snow, capturing the essence of the coldest month of the year. The Limbourg brothers' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the portrayal of peasants engaged in various winter activities. In the foreground, a group of peasants huddle around a fire inside a thatched-roof cottage, their breath visible in the cold air, emphasizing the harshness of the winter season. The figures are depicted with a remarkable degree of realism, showcasing the Limbourg brothers' skill in rendering human anatomy and expressions.
In the background, the landscape extends to show a frozen river and snow-covered fields, with additional figures engaged in tasks such as chopping wood and tending to livestock. The use of perspective and the careful gradation of colors create a sense of depth and space, drawing the viewer's eye into the scene. The sky is rendered in a pale, wintry blue, enhancing the overall atmosphere of cold and stillness.
The "Février" page, like the other calendar illustrations in "Les Très Riches Heures," serves not only as a visual delight but also as a historical document, providing insights into the daily lives and seasonal activities of medieval peasants. The Limbourg brothers' work on this manuscript was tragically cut short by their untimely deaths, likely due to the plague, but their legacy endures through the exquisite artistry and historical significance of "Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry."
