Painting Description
"The Flagmakers (Les Fabricants De Drapeaux) is an 1863 artwork by the renowned French painter Jean-Léonérôme, a figure to the academic painting tradition of the 19th century. The artwork, oil on canvas, measures 81 x 100 cm and is held in the collection of Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France.
The painting depicts a domestic scene from the American Civil War, where two women can be seen sewing a Confederate flag. Gérôme, famous for his Orientalist subjects and historical scenes, here experiments with the genre of genre painting – a category of art focused on everyday scenes of ordinary activities. It's a diversion from his earlier works, suggesting a different approach to his artistic style during this period. The Flagmakers is considered one of his lesser-known pieces, but it nevertheless offers insight into Gérôme's stylistic versatility and his attention to contemporary events. The painting's treatment of light and shadow, as well as its acute detail, are quintessential elements of Gérôme's work.
The Flagmakers illustrates not only private acts of loyalty and resistance during the Civil War, but also encapsulates a chapter of American history from the perspective of a European artist. It signifies a broader entrée by Gérôme into portraying scenes from contemporary events, indicating a shift in the artist's work to include more immediate occurrences alongside his characteristic historical and Orientalist scenes."
