Painting Description
"The Progress of Love" is a series of four paintings created by the French Rococo artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard between 1771 and 1773. Commissioned by Madame du Barry, the last maîtresse-en-titre of Louis XV, for the Château de Louveciennes, the paintings were intended to adorn her new pavilion designed by the architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux. Fragonard's series is a quintessential example of Rococo art, with its playful, romantic, and sensual themes that celebrate love and courtship.
The four original paintings in the series are "The Pursuit," "The Meeting," "The Lover Crowned," and "The Love Letters." Each canvas captures a different stage in the romantic relationship of a young couple, set against idyllic garden landscapes that are lush and imbued with symbolism. The works are characterized by their soft, pastel color palette, dynamic composition, and the delicate, fluid brushwork that Fragonard is renowned for. The figures are elegantly dressed in contemporary fashions, and their interactions are infused with a sense of theatricality and emotional depth.
Despite their initial purpose, the paintings were rejected by Madame du Barry, possibly due to a change in taste or a misunderstanding of the allegorical content. Fragonard subsequently moved the series to his cousin's villa, the Villa Maubert, in Grasse, where he added over a dozen supplementary panels and overdoors to complement the original set. The expanded ensemble of works became known as "The Love Cycle."
Today, "The Progress of Love" is celebrated for its embodiment of the Rococo spirit and its exquisite portrayal of the frivolity and complexity of human affection. The original four canvases are now housed in The Frick Collection in New York City, where they continue to enchant viewers with their timeless depiction of the universal theme of love's progression.
