Painting Description
"The Progress of Love: The Meeting" is a renowned painting by the French Rococo artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard, created in 1773. This work is part of a series of four large-scale paintings entitled "The Progress of Love," commissioned by Madame du Barry, the last maîtresse-en-titre of King Louis XV, for the Château de Louveciennes. The series was intended to decorate her new pavilion, designed by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux.
"The Meeting" captures a moment of romantic anticipation and clandestine affection, embodying the Rococo style's playful and sensual elegance. In this scene, a young couple is depicted in a lush garden setting, with the man climbing over a wall to reach his beloved, who waits with open arms. The use of soft, pastel colors and dynamic composition, along with the intricate portrayal of the surrounding foliage and the lovers' sumptuous attire, exemplifies Fragonard's mastery of the Rococo aesthetic.
The painting's theme of love's progression is echoed throughout the series, which also includes "The Pursuit," "The Lover Crowned," and "The Love Letters." Together, these works narrate a story of romantic courtship and the various stages of love. However, the commission was ultimately rejected by Madame du Barry, and Fragonard took the paintings back to his studio. They were later acquired by the dealer Jean-Claude Richard, Abbé de Saint-Non, and subsequently changed hands several times before becoming part of the Frick Collection in New York City, where they are currently displayed.
"The Progress of Love: The Meeting" is celebrated for its vivacious and whimsical portrayal of love, as well as its technical brilliance. It remains a quintessential example of Fragonard's art and an important piece within the broader context of 18th-century French painting. The work continues to captivate audiences with its romantic narrative and exquisite detail, reflecting the era's cultural preoccupation with love, pleasure, and the pastoral ideal.
