Painting Description
"The Fountain of the Apostles" from "The Hours of the Cross and the Holy Spirit" is a sought-after work by the notable French Renaissance painter, Jean Fouquetc.1420–1481). Completed around 1460, this miniature forms part of a Book of Hours, a collection of Christian devotional texts which were widely popular during the Middle Ages.
The image derived name from its central theme – a fountain embellished by an ensemble of twelve apostles. The fountain, filled with flowing water symbolic of life and purity, serves as a meeting point for the apostles, who each bear their unique identifying attributes, denoting their martyrdom.
With "The Fountain of the Apostles," Fouquet exhibits his typical approach to spatial organization and keen attention to detail, resulting in an image that effectively conveys both the spiritual and the earthly. Despite its dimension constraints typical to miniature arts, the work presents a striking visual complexity that adds to its intrigue.
Insofar as provenance is concerned, the image is housed in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France, a repository for several other works by Fouquet. Jean Fouquet, during his lifetime, was praised for his innovative role in the development of portrait miniature painting, and "The Fountain of the Apostles" remains one of his paramount contributions to the genre.
