Painting Description
"David Sending Uriah to His Death" is a 15th-century miniature painting by French artist Jean Colombe. It is part of a collection of illustrations made for the "Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry," a manuscript that stands as one of the most important and lavish examples of medieval illumination. The manuscript was commissioned by John, Duke of Berry, and the work on it was initiated by the Limbourg brothers, who were unable to complete it due to their premature deaths. Jean Colombe is credited with completing the manuscript several decades later, between 1485 and 1489.
The miniature depicts the biblical story of King David, who, having impregnated Bathsheba, sends her husband Uriah the Hittite back to the front lines of battle, ensuring his death to cover up the affair. This narrative is from the second book of Samuel in the Old Testament. Colombe's illustration captures the moment of betrayal, with King David handing the sealed orders to the unsuspecting Uriah, who is unaware that he carries his own death warrant.
Colombe's work is characterized by its intricate detail and rich colors, which are evident in this miniature. The painting reflects the artistic style of the late Middle Ages, transitioning into the early Renaissance, with a focus on realism and depth, as well as the use of perspective. The miniature is a testament to the complex interplay of morality, power, and human emotion, themes that were frequently explored in medieval art.
The "Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" is housed in the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France. "David Sending Uriah to His Death" remains a significant work within the manuscript for its artistic merit and as an example of Jean Colombe's contribution to the completion of this monumental project.
