Painting Description
"David Being Crowned by God" is a miniature attributed to the French painter and manuscript illuminator Jean Colombe (circa 1430 – circa 1493). The artwork is part of the richly decorated manuscript known as the "Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry," which is one of the most famous and luxurious illuminated manuscripts of the 15th century. The Très Riches Heures was commissioned by John, Duke of Berry, and created by the Limbourg brothers, with later contributions by Colombe.
The miniature depicts the biblical scene of the young David being anointed as king by the prophet Samuel, as described in the First Book of Samuel. This event marks God's selection of David as the future king of Israel, succeeding Saul. In Colombe's rendition, the divine approval is represented by God crowning David from above, symbolizing the direct intervention and blessing of the deity in the anointment process.
Jean Colombe is known to have completed the work on the Très Riches Heures after the deaths of the Limbourg brothers and the Duke of Berry. His contribution to the manuscript began around 1485 and continued until the late 1480s or early 1490s. Colombe's style is characterized by his use of vivid colors and intricate detail, which is evident in the "David Being Crowned by God" miniature.
The Très Riches Heures, including the "David Being Crowned by God" miniature, is housed in the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France. The manuscript remains an essential piece of art history, reflecting the pinnacle of French Gothic manuscript illumination and the transition to the early Renaissance. Jean Colombe's work on the manuscript is particularly noted for its contribution to the preservation and completion of this masterpiece of medieval art.
