Painting Description
"Persian Woman" is plate 91 from the collection "Recueil de Cent Estampes représentant différentes Nations du Levant tirées sur les Tableaux Peints d'après Nature en 1707 & 1708," a significant work by the Flemish-French painter Jean Baptiste Vanmour (1671–1737). Vanmour, who spent much of his career in Constantinople, is renowned for his detailed and vivid portrayal of the people and customs of the Ottoman Empire. The collection, commissioned by the French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Charles de Ferriol, consists of one hundred engravings based on Vanmour's original paintings and was published with accompanying descriptions by the French orientalist Antoine Galland.
The "Persian Woman" plate is a striking example of Vanmour's skill in capturing the attire and bearing of individuals from various social strata and ethnic backgrounds within the Ottoman realm. This particular image depicts a woman of Persian origin, showcasing her traditional clothing and accessories, which would have been exotic and intriguing to European audiences at the time. The attention to detail in the garment's patterns, textures, and colors reflects Vanmour's commitment to ethnographic accuracy and his ability to convey the richness of the Levantine cultural tapestry.
The "Recueil de Cent Estampes" is considered an important historical document for its ethnographic significance and artistic merit. It provides a window into the diverse society of the early 18th-century Ottoman Empire and serves as a testament to the cross-cultural interactions between Europe and the Near East during this period. Vanmour's work remains a valuable resource for historians and art historians alike, offering insights into the period's fashion, diversity, and the complexities of cultural representation.
