Painting Description
"Socrates Dragging Alcibiades from the Embrace of Aspasia" is an 18th Century painting by the French Jean-Baptiste Regault. The painting, classified under the Neoclassicism style, was completed in 1791. Its title references a specific event from classical antiquity, namely a supposed intervention by the philosopher Socrates. The painting portrays an imagined account of Socrates pulling his student Alcibiades away from his lover Aspasia's company, perhaps symbolizing a conflict between physical and intellectual attractions.
The painting is an oil on canvas and 51 x 40.7 inches in dimension. It is currently part of the collection at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Marseille, France. The vivid characters and the dramatic situation in the painting are typical of Regnault's work, as he displayed a penchant for narrative scenes from history and mythology.
The main figures in the painting are all prominent figures from Ancient Athens. Alcibiades was a prominent politician and military general; Aspasia, the woman he is shown embracing, was a well-known courtesan who interacted with the Athenian philosopher Socrates. Meanwhile, Socrates is considered one of the founders of Western philosophy, famous for his contributions to the field of ethics. Through the dramatic depiction of this historic trio, Regnault uses visual storytelling to convey a reflection on the conflicts between passion, intellect and power.
