Painting Description
The Mausoleum of the Marechal de Saxe is a monumental funerary sculpture created by the French artist Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. Commissioned by Louis XV in honor of Maurice de Saxe (1696–1750), a celebrated German marshal who served in the French army, the mausoleum is a masterpiece of 18th-century sculpture and a significant work in the history of French art. It is located in the Saint Thomas Church in Strasbourg, France.
Maurice de Saxe, the illegitimate son of Augustus II the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, was a military commander known for his victories in the War of the Austrian Succession, particularly the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745. Following his death in 1750, Louis XV wished to honor his achievements and commissioned Pigalle to create a grand mausoleum.
Pigalle spent over two decades on the project, traveling to Saxony to study his subject and to Rome to refine his artistic skills. The mausoleum was completed in 1777 and is renowned for its allegorical representation of the Marshal's life and death. The sculpture depicts a dying Saxe being welcomed by the figure of Death into the afterlife, while Hercules, representing military valor, attempts to ward off the inevitable. Other allegorical figures, such as France, represented as a mourning woman, and personifications of the marshal's virtues, surround the central scene.
The work is celebrated for its emotional expressiveness, dynamic composition, and the technical skill evident in the rendering of different textures and materials. The Mausoleum of the Marechal de Saxe is considered one of Pigalle's most significant works and reflects the transition in European art from the Baroque to Neoclassicism. It is a testament to the artistic and cultural values of its time and remains an important monument within the Saint Thomas Church, attracting visitors and scholars interested in French art and history.
