Painting Description
"Ugolino and His Sons" is a renowned sculpture created by French artist Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827–1875). The work, which was completed in 1867, is inspired by a tragic episode from Dante Alighieri's "Inferno," part of his epic poem "The Divine Comedy." The sculpture depicts the harrowing story of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, who, along with his sons and grandsons, was imprisoned and left to starve to death by his political rivals in Pisa, Italy, in the 13th century.
Carpeaux's sculpture captures the moment of intense despair and suffering as described by Dante, where Ugolino is seen with his offspring in a cramped, dungeon-like space. The count's figure is central and dominant, with an expression of anguish and contemplation, as he is torn between the natural impulse to eat to survive and the horror of cannibalism, as suggested by Dante's text that his children offered themselves as food to their father.
The work is a masterful example of the French sculptor's ability to convey raw emotion and psychological depth through his art. Carpeaux's use of expressive realism and his attention to anatomical detail contribute to the sculpture's powerful impact. The composition's dynamism and the textured surfaces enhance the dramatic effect, making "Ugolino and His Sons" a significant work of 19th-century sculpture.
Originally sculpted in plaster, the piece was later cast in bronze. The sculpture was well-received and earned Carpeaux recognition and accolades, including a medal at the Paris Salon. Today, "Ugolino and His Sons" can be found in several important collections, with one of the most notable casts displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The work remains an important example of the Romantic movement in art and continues to be studied for its emotional expressiveness and technical mastery.
