Painting Description
"Oedipus and the Sphinx 2" is a painting by the French Neoclassical artist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, created in 1864 as a smaller replica of his earlier and larger work "Oedipus and the Sphinx" from 1808. The painting depicts the mythological encounter between Oedipus and the Sphinx, a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a woman, which had been terrorizing the city of Thebes by posing a riddle to travelers and devouring those who could not answer correctly.
Ingres, known for his precise draftsmanship and polished surfaces, revisits the theme with a focus on the intellectual confrontation between the man and the monster. The work is characterized by its clear lines, smooth modeling of forms, and the calm, yet intense, atmosphere that surrounds the central figures. Oedipus is portrayed at the moment of contemplation, exuding a sense of confidence and calm before he delivers the answer that would ultimately lead to the Sphinx's destruction.
The 1864 version, measuring 80.3 x 101.3 cm, is housed in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. This later rendition of the subject showcases Ingres's enduring interest in themes of classical antiquity and his mastery in rendering the human form, as well as his ability to imbue his subjects with psychological depth. "Oedipus and the Sphinx 2" is a testament to Ingres's lifelong engagement with the Neoclassical style and his influence on the academic art tradition.
The painting is significant not only for its artistic merits but also for its representation of the intellectual triumph of man over enigma, a theme that resonated with the Enlightenment ideals of reason and knowledge prevailing during Ingres's time. It remains an important work in the study of 19th-century French painting and Ingres's oeuvre, reflecting the artist's dedication to classical themes and his skill in their reinterpretation for contemporary audiences.
